I played the original Halo on PC when it came out years ago. Never played Halo 2. Looking at Halo 3 it really looks amazing. Halo was a blast. So would I be nuts to want an XBox just so I can play Halo 3? I'm not a big gamer which is to say that when I do want to waste time I really have to like the game. So I doubt I'd buy a whole library of games if I did purchase an XBox.
Is it worth it?

I'm an admitted Halo 3 fan boy, and didn't buy a 360 until H3 came out.
But as a software engineer, the snazzy graphics and new weapons / vehicles isn't what impresses me. The most intriguing part is the optional stuff built into the engine.
The addition of forge for editing equipment build-outs on a map is huge. This will allow fans to keep the game fresh for years to come.
In-game scoring for the campaign makes clear how well you play the game and helps you improve your play. The are also skulls which act as configuration options increase the complexity of the game.
To quote Ferris Bueller, "If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up"
